Analysis of music video Clint Eastwood- Gorillaz

ANALYSIS OF MUSIC VIDEO
CLINT EASTWOOD- GORILLAZ USING GOODWINS THEORY

STAR IMAGE
Clint Eastwood is their first single and there is an introduction to characters in the end of the music video this allows the audience to know who they are.

This is showing Murdoc as being aggressive by having a cheeky smile and 2D being motionless. This shot depicts, Murdoc steeling the shot which could also connote the star persona bring stolen from 2-D.This shot could have numerous interpretations as Murdoc is leering towards 2-D it could also be seen as voyeurism. I feel that more that Murdoc’s facial expressions his eyes are very bold and connect with the audience creating a very gothic and spooky atmosphere.

Band
2-D is the main singer
Russel is the drummer
Noodle is the main guitarist
Murdoc is the bassist

CONCEPT, NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE
Them doing a performance and Murdoc is the first person the audience see's.
The concept and narrative are linked.
The music video is showing a possessed or bad side of Russel and this shown by Russel being the rap artist, by the use of point of view shot from 2-D to Russel shows the superiority than others and also shows his split personality of his. From the earth gorillas arise which links in to the name of the band, and then noodle the main guitarists is running happily and kills the gorillas allowing the possessed and bad version of Russel to enter back in to him self. This shows noddle as the hero and despite him not constantly being the video like Russel, Murdoc and 2-D, by showing Noodle as the hero it gives him the star image and importance to Noodle as well. I feel that this music video shows importance to all characters and portrays each character different from one another allowing the audience to choose their favorite and most like-able character.
Gothic atmosphere is created by the use of- Skeleton bones, creatures such as zombies or gorillas and the Jesus cross sign.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUALS
This low angle point of view shot is used when the rap artist says, 'panoramic view,' this means that the possessed and bigger version of Murdoc is a gigantic and advanced version of him. The way he acts in the video by moving his arms side to side shows the vulnerability of the other characters and the emphasis of the words he is saying, 'panoramic view.'
Use of pathetic fallacy by showing rain as 2-D says, 'I aint happy. '
The music makes the gorillas to dance in a certain manner to keep up with the pace of music and this is very effective.

GENRE
I felt that the genre of this album is Alternative based on the analysis of their first song. I felt this way because they have used conventions from both rap and rock music which makes them a versatile band. This a very good way of marketing the Gorillaz as they will appeal a wider range of audience's.

INTERTEXTUALITY
Whilst the gorillas are fighting to the slow pace music you are able to see one of the gorillas doing a moon walk which allowed me to make references to Michael Jackson's music video thriller. By adding references to other music videos or artists it creates a sense of humor and allows the audience to make their own repertoire.
